
The Downtown Hamilton Business Improvement Area (BIA) is hiring two Placemaking Coordinators to support the daily operations of outdoor activities on King William Street as part of an exciting new public space project in the heart of downtown Hamilton.
Position Details
Term: Temporary Full-Time, July 10 to September 15, 2025
Schedule: Approx. 36 to 38 hours/week, typically Monday to Saturday
Location: Primarily on-site at King William Street in downtown Hamilton
Compensation: $25/hour
Position Description
Led by the City of Hamilton in collaboration with the BIA, this project will transform one block of King William Street (between James Street North and Hughson Street) into a pedestrian-friendly destination featuring free weekly programming like live music, vendor markets, dance performances, and more.
As a Placemaking Coordinator, you will help bring this space to life. You will welcome visitors, support performers and vendors, assist with equipment setup, and help ensure the street remains vibrant, inclusive, and safe.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the daily functioning of the King William Summer Street space during scheduled shifts
- Set up and take down tables, chairs, umbrellas, signage, and other equipment as needed
- Provide on-site support for programming partners such as musicians, vendor markets, and community organizations
- Act as a friendly and knowledgeable presence for the public, answering questions and supporting a positive experience
- Liaise with City of Hamilton staff and other program partners to ensure smooth daily operations
- Assist with data collection and documentation, including attendance tracking, brief surveys, photos, and general observations
- Help create and maintain an atmosphere that is safe, inclusive, well maintained and inviting to all
Ideal Qualifications
- Reliable, proactive, and comfortable working independently in a public setting
- Strong interpersonal skills and a welcoming attitude
- Experience in events, customer service, hospitality, placemaking, or public programming is an asset
- Ability to lift and move light equipment (tables, chairs, signage, pop up tents, sandbags)
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions
- Comfortable being photographed as part of program documentation and promotion
- Familiarity with downtown Hamilton is an asset
- Willing to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends
