John Street South is one of the best spots in the Downtown Hamilton BIA to grab a bite to eat, from asian to western cuisine, to long-standing eateries to freshly opened restaurants. Something that the street has been missing for several months now is a classic burger joint for those lunchtime rushes or those late nights in the city.
Hamilton and surrounding cities in Southern Ontario share a real desire to shop local, whether it’s food, garments, groceries, tools, crafts, building materials, anything really. Anything that can be sourced locally, Hamilton will go for it. This certainly applies to burger joints too. In Downtown Hamilton, we are lucky to have plenty of dedicated burger restaurants, or places serving burgers, on the northern end of the BIA. Think of great spots such as HAMBRGR, John Street Diner, Electric Diner and The French for a great burger, but the southern side of the BIA hasn’t had anything at all in 2026. That is, untill, this issue was suddently remedied with the opening of Patty Crunch on 85 John Street South!
Patty Crunch is a classic smash burger spot, it’s not the fancy restaurant you take a work client or first date to, it’s the perfect restaurant to sit down and enjoy a meal at after a long day on the tools, or you want quality without the wait! The newly opened halal burger joint currently serves beef and vegetarian options, with chicken soon on the way. We got to try them the day of opening and we couldn’t be happier with John South’s newest addition!
What we tried
Before we talk about the food, we have to give a shoutout to the wonderful seating in the restaurant. The leather seats were an incredibly comfy and pleasant surprise! I know, we don’t often talk about the comfort of the chairs when we write about the different businesses downtown, but you have to dine in and try them for yourself. In a world where most businesses are turning to cheap plastic, this premium seating in an unexpected place was an awesome start to our dining experience. Hamilton Spectator, I’m not sure if any of your journalists will read this, but create a best seating category and give Patty Crunch the diamond award!
Naturally, burgers were in fact, in order today. We tried the Classic Smash and the Barbecue Smash and we were incredibly stoked with both options.
One of the other fun twists is the subtle (or in some cases, not so subtle!) spice that can be found in each and every sauce used in Patty Crunch’s burgers. Made in-house, these little additions of heat came as a very pleasant surprise to us while we enjoyed our meal. It’s something that most people will be able to handle more than fine, but if you have a mate that struggles with salt and pepper, maybe ask for just regular ketchup!
In addition to the burger we made it a combo and enjoyed their beautifully crispy fries. These are of course the classic to go with a burger, but once again you can opt for a spiced option if you’d like too. We decided to just go for the regular fries which were superb, but after experiencing how good the spices on the burger was, you better believe that we’ll be back for the spicy fries! And lastly we enjoyed a house made brownie for dessert! It was amazing, and dense! You could build a house with it! The decadant chocolaty taste was on full display, and the weight of the treat made it very filling, we ended up finishing ours back at the office! All of their sweet treats are baked in house and definitely worth adding to your order.
The verdict
While John Street deserves a burger joint just as much as any street in Hamilton, they’re lucky to have one that’s started with an absolute roar and is producing high quality food. Patty Crunch is a simple place with subtle but welcome twists in their preperation, such as their dash of spice and their in-house baking, and it does all of that excellently.
Keep a close eye on their social media as their menu will continue to expand as the weeks go by. If a beef burger isn’t your fancy, perhaps one of their vegetarian or chicken options will be perfect for you. Next time you’re craving a smash burger, consider trying out Patty Crunch on John Street South!
