June 25th 2026,
The frigidity of Canada might not be all that noticebale right now, with heatblasts, sticky storms and the UV index sitting over 10, but making the most of every moment of summer in Hamilton is not just about living in the moment for us, it’s also about getting as much done as the inevitable passage of time means these great moments won’t last forevor. We also know people that cheat death, or in this case, winter, by heading to the tropics of the Carribbean, the Pacific, or Asia during the cold months. Whether that be colleagues, family, or friends. Sometimes these aptly named “Snow Birds” can really rub it in your face!
But what if you could have a taste of the tropics year-round? In summer, a Bayfront park treat. In winter, an escape from the snow (and the staggering price of out of season grocery store fruit!) King Street’s “The Mango Place,” Hui Lau Shan 许留山, is here to deliver!
Some might be surprised to hear that Hong Kong and it’s rich dessert culture has a climate similar to Southern Ontario, with sticky summers baking in the sun to bundling up in late autumn and winter, albiet trading a bit less snow for more dampness, they’ve mastered the art of celebrating the warmth and staving off the cold with delicious treats. And we get to enjoy that expertise right here in Downtown Hamilton!
What we tried

Everyone on the BIA team has been to The Mango Place previously, so with well-aquainted palates, we knew we had to get our staples, but also push the boat out on a few things! This spot is called The Mango Place after all, and so it’s only fitting we got the Mango Chewy Bowl and the Manco Coconut with Tapioca drink. And let me tell you right now, these were brilliant! None of that overripeness or staleness you can get with grocery store Mangoes that brave the journey from the Caribbean or Asia over to the True North, just a genuine, sweet, mouth-melting mango flavour that really sticks it to those Snow Birds and their expensive tastes!
Bubble tea is also on the menu and we tried the Five Stars Milk Tea which, in a true testament to it’s name, really was a five star beverage. While The Mango Place might have it’s reputation built on delicious mango desserts, don’t sleep on their bubble tea! It was smooth, sweet, fragrant, and honestly a solid option on the menu, especially for anyone you know that isn’t huge on mango.
Two unique things we tried was the Milk Foam Strawberry Frappe and the Watermelon with Aloe Jelly tea. The Milk Foam Strawberry Frappe is the definition of “tastes like summer.” This refreshing beverage was an exciting addition to our order, soemthing we didn’t even know they did upon arriving! And the Watermelon with Aloe Jelly tea has got to be one of the most hydrating beverages we’ve ever had. We felt like we could go for a run after enjoying it!

The verdict on The Mango place
So, whether you’re trying to embrace the Canadian summer, or in denial over the inevitable shoveling of snow taking up every moment of the second half of the year. The Mango Place, Hui Lau Shan 许留山 has got you covered any season. And that’s what sets it apart from the competition, this isn’t a strictly summer or winter spot to enjoy. It’s Hong Kong-style desserts worthy of being celebrated year-round!
